Music
At our school, music is a vibrant and exciting part of every child’s learning journey. We use the Charanga music scheme, carefully adapted and enriched to provide the very best musical experiences for our pupils. Each year group explores three engaging units throughout the year, developing their skills in listening, performing, composing and appraising music. Children enjoy weekly music lessons and singing assemblies, building confidence, creativity and a lifelong love of music. We are also proud to provide memorable performance opportunities, with our pupils regularly performing at internationally renowned venues such as the Brighton Dome and the Brighton Centre, inspiring them to shine on some of the region’s biggest stages.

Curriculum
Our music curriculum is based on the Charanga scheme, which provides a comprehensive and progressive approach to teaching the National Curriculum for Music. Through a carefully sequenced programme of learning, children develop their skills in singing, performing, composing, listening and appraising across a wide range of musical styles and genres. At our school, lessons are thoughtfully adapted and enhanced to reflect the needs, interests and musical experiences of our pupils, ensuring that learning is engaging, relevant and inclusive for all children.

Rock Steady
We are delighted to work in partnership with Rocksteady Music School, giving children the exciting opportunity to learn and perform in a real rock band. Through weekly sessions with professional musicians, pupils can develop their skills on instruments such as guitar, keyboard, drums and vocals while building confidence, teamwork and resilience. Rocksteady provides a fun and engaging way for children to experience live music-making, culminating in regular performances that allow them to showcase their talents and celebrate their progress.

Junior Choir
Our joyful Junior Choir regularly performs throughout the year and also performs annually at the Brighton and Hove Schools Christmas Concert at the Brighton Centre.

Singing Assembly
Pupils take part in a weekly singing assembly, where they learn a variety of songs.  We LOVE singing at West Blatchington Primary School!
Performances
There are many performance opportunities at our school and examples include:
  • Harvest Assembly
  • Winter Gathering
  • Winter Celebration
  • Spring Assembly
  • Soundmakers Concert
  • Year 6 Leavers Assembly
  • Our annual KS2 production

Community
We also love performing to the wider community.  One key example of this was when we got to take part in a very special project for the Rugby World Cup, when the tournament visited our city. Over 250 children from Brighton & Hove joined together to sing ‘Shining Brighter’.  The song was made up of lyrics and actions created by the children, including a very catchy section named ‘Lions’ created by the Year 6 children from West Blatchington Primary & Nursery School.  It was a fantastic event and was thoroughly enjoyed by the children as well as the large crowds which gathered to watch.

Relating Week
We have been having great fun in music throughout Relating Week!  KS2 children composed lyrics to reflect the Relating Learning hero and we set them to the melody of ‘Happy’.  Please click on the link below to listen to our fantastic song!
