Curriculum & Assessment

At West Blatchington Primary & Nursery School we create a learning ethos where all children are actively involved in engaging and stimulating learning experiences to enable them to develop, achieve and flourish. Our curriculum is inclusive, meeting the needs of our diverse community and supporting all pupils to achieve the highest standards. We aspire for all children to develop a love for learning and to develop a resilience in order to meet the challenges of modern life.

We believe that having a secure knowledge of the pupils' current attainment is essential in aiding future progress.  We continually assess our children to ensure that the learning provided builds on their existing knowledge and understanding.

Curriculum 1

Providing a broad and balanced Curriculum, based on deepening knowledge and skills

We have designed our curriculum with our pupils’ input to balance the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum and a mastery approach within broad, engaging and exciting programmes of study that deepen the children’s knowledge, skills and learning behaviours.

It is our underlying belief that every child should feel valued and experience the feeling of success in a wide range of curriculum areas.  We teach through enquiry based themes which are planned to ensure clear progression. We have a central focus on developing the key skills of critical curiosity, reasoning and reflection throughout both Key Stages, building from the characteristics of effective learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage.

The curriculum is filled with first hand purposeful experiences which enable children to expand their horizons and benefit from the breadth of cultural opportunities available in our locality, nationally and internationally. These activities enrich their lives and those of our whole school community and make them proud of their human values and the diverse society to which they belong and play an active part in. They give our children the chance to take on challenges and practise essential knowledge and skills to extend their expertise.

Preparing future citizens requires a focus on values, citizenship and an understanding of how our society works and the important part each person plays in this. We place a high priority on ensuring our children’s physical and mental wellbeing is being met. We understand that children will not be successful learners unless they are emotionally secure, therefore we carefully monitor children’s progress with their personal development and our well planned and thoughtful approach to spiritual, moral, social and cultural development helps to ensure that every child is well cared for and supported.

We aim to create lifelong and responsible learners who are equipped to make informed choices throughout their lives and to live successfully in an ever changing world, becoming fully rounded, resilient global citizens.

Promoting British Values
